Andare, a fabled court jester, employed by the Sinhalese King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe (1742–1782) is a popular character in Sri Lankan folklore. Known for his antics and mischievous behaviour, he is the playful subject of Tilak Samarawickrema’s 35 mm film commissioned by Corona Cinematografica Rome in 1978. Initially produced using cell animation where 24 frames were hand-drawn by the artist to represent every second of movement, the work brings to life Samarawickrema’s unique drawing language. In common with the artist’s wider drawing practice, the animation reflects his fascination with the sinuous lines of the Sinhala alphabet. An Indo-Aryan language, Sinhala is composed almost entirely of curvilinear lines and curlicues. Some have argued that when Sinhala was written on dried palm leaves, curves were preferable over straight lines because they did not split the veins of the palm leaf. The script is widely studied because it is the language of much of the earliest extant literature on Buddhism.
