In the 1990s, to frustrate the operations of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a separatist militant group fighting for independence, the Sri Lankan government imposed embargoes on fuel, medicines and food items reaching the north and east of Sri Lanka. In the face of death and hardship, civilians in these areas resorted to increasingly inventive ways of making do. More recently, since the end of the war in 2009, continuing militarization of the north has prevented civilians from accessing their homes and stifled the potential for reconciliation. ‘Paper’ and ‘Kerosene’ capture the remarkable ingenuity and resilience of taxi drivers, newspaper workers and civilians trying to survive the war and its repercussions. Kannan Arunasalam employs an observational approach to the narratives found in these films. His carefully observed sequences of real people talking without a script impart and underline an attempt to capture reality. In 2013, Arunasalam’s compelling ability to get under the surface of a story stripped of sensationalism, led to ‘Kerosene’ and ‘Paper’ being awarded the prestigious Prism Award for Best Documentary Short at the Seattle South Asian International Documentary Festival.
