The conscription of young men and women by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a separatist militant group in Sri Lanka, was common practice during the civil conflict. T. P. G. Amarajeewa’s self-portrait alludes to the forced recruitment process by which the LTTE operated. His naked torso shown wrapped with a measuring tape parodies the desire of the camera to capture, like the militants, his image. The title of the work, ‘Do Not Measure Me’, provides a further rejection of the conflict’s division on the basis of ethnic types, recalling how evolutionary theories functioned to divide and biologically categorize subjects. The work also critiques depictions of the male body by colonial-era photographers in Sri Lanka from the late 1890s and the early 20th century who usually emphasised the sensuality of the subjects they depicted.
