The exploration of loss and displacement in T. Shanaathanan’s work is often accompanied by a composite of viewpoints. While his early works experimented with aerial viewpoints more recent works have introduced narrative perspectives. The element of story-telling, however, has always been present in the artist’s work and over the years has synthesised into a textual language where symbols, riddles and reality collude and collide. ‘Missing’, an early etching depicts a howling dog seated between two rubber slippers, presumably those of his missing owner. Though the symbolic evocation of loss is conspicuously laid bare, the grieving animal also reminds us of allegiances and loyalties that loss inspires. To this end, the work, like much of the artist’s practice, communicates quiet defiance in the face of adversity.
