First exhibited: ‘Me, Myself and I’, Barefoot Gallery, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 2010

Conceived by the artist to be seen as two lines of facing figures, ‘Me, Myself and I’ is a series of self-portraits. Drawn in profile, the figures reflect the artist’s training in Mughal miniature painting where the human form, often a figure of nobility, is shown in profile. The two lines of figures do not meet the gaze of the audience and instead look across at one another in a combative stance. Conversely, they also personify the passive de-humanized figures of subjugation that respond to orders and move like lemmings towards one another before falling into the gap that holds them apart. Like much of the artist’s work over the last 15 years, ‘Me, Myself and I’ is a sardonic reflection on the artist’s own experiences of migrant labour and the economic hardship he has faced as a foreigner living outside of Sri Lanka.
