‘Cabinet of Resistance’ utilises and transforms the card index bureau. An administrative archival system, originally designed to collate scientific data in the 18th century, the bureau was later adopted by libraries and museums, along with state bureaucracy for filing purposes. ‘Cabinet of Resistance No. 2’, uses the bureauto present first-person testimonies of nearly fifty individuals, who found inventive means to overcome the difficulties they faced during the civil war in Sri Lanka. Drawn from various professions associated with the broader creative industry, such as studio photographers and letterpress printers, the work presents card files of interviews by the artist with professionals who faced economic hardships, multiple displacements, communication obstacles and travel restrictions. The project attempts to make known multiple histories of endurance by repurposing the colonial card index from a faceless governing instrument into
a cabinet of resistance.
