M. Vijitharan was forced to flee his home in the north of Sri Lanka, during the last stages of the civil war. Much of his work, as a young artist, has revolved around the experience of his displacement and that of his family, who belong to a community of farmers. In common with several younger artists, Vijitharan uses non-traditional art materials and found objects that embrace an aesthetic of the everyday, where materials are already ascribed with uses and commonplace meanings related to locality and place. The artist resides in Kilinochchi, where the bicycle is one of the most common forms of transport. Vijitharan’s presentation of a seat without its frame and wheels parodies the displacement of people from their homes and communities. Using an economy of means, the work starkly evokes the devastating sense of loss during the final stages of the conflict.
