143Disappearing and Reappearing Landscape (2012)
Pradeep Thalawatta (b. 1979)
Pyrography drawing on photographs
Collection the artist
First exhibited: Kalaithuthu Kala Mutram, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, 2018
Since 2010 Pradeep Thalawatta has frequently undertaken the 420 km bus journey from Colombo to Jaffna. The long journeys gave rise to several artworks and projects. ‘Disappearing and Reappearing Landscape’ juxtaposes two versions of a found photograph that appeared in the news on 13 May 2009. It shows a burning ambulance, stranded on a road within the no-fire zone in the city of Kilinochchi, in the Northern Province. Using a soldering iron, Thalawatta attempted to record the image by tracing over it, inadvertently erasing the image in the process. The artist’s attempt to document a landscape and the events it bore witness to via a process that deliberately obliterates whatever it comes into contact with, is a conceit and provocation to consider what is recorded versus what is forgotten.
