First exhibited: ‘Barrelism and Other Works’, The Heritage Gallery, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 1997
In 1997 Chandraguptha Thenuwara purchased a map from the Survey Department of Sri Lanka. On the map, the artist marked all the military/police checkpoints in Colombo, added a border made up of camouflaged barrels, inserted the word ‘Barrelism’ in front of the map’s title ‘Tourist Map’ and proceeded to pin it up on a gallery wall. The work was accompanied by a manifesto titled ‘Barrelism’. The artist intended to make visible the militarization of the urban environment concealed within the symbol of the camouflaged barrel. Over the last 23 years, this work and those that followed, represent a response to the camouflaged barricades erected across the Sri Lankan landscape, during the periods of violent ethnic tension in the country. Such ‘barrelscapes’, which were an iconic feature in the country from the 1990s to 2009, operate as a recurring motif throughout the artist’s practice.
