Aubrey Collette was one of the founding members of the ’43 Group— a collective of modern mid-20th-century artists established in 1943—widely recognised as Sri Lanka’s first modernist collective. Alongside his work as a political cartoonist at ‘The Times of Ceylon’ in 1946, a post he held until the early 1960s, Collette drew various portraits, including members of the ’43 Group. His famous portrait of the Group hangs in the collection of the Sapumal Foundation in Colombo. This portrait caricatures fellow ’43 Group artist Lionel Wendt (1900–1944) with whom Collette was a close friend. Close friendships also existed with W. J. G. Beling (1907–1992) and George Keyt (1901–1993), all founding members of the ’43 Group. The particular friendship of these four artists can be evidenced through their respective works and the exhibitions they organised for one another inspired by the likely exchange of ideas and discussions that such artistic allegiances gave rise to.
