Collection the artist

Tissa De Alwis’ work stems from a deep fascination with military history and the narratives of conquests, battles and military allegiances that have defined modern history. His works take the form of sculptural tableaus that originate from the environment of his bedroom cum studio installation, an ongoing work he has created and maintained for over thirty years. A self-trained artist, De Alwis intricately models with plasticine, repurposing found objects and materials as inventive and often uncanny adornments, regalia and props. His sculptures draw references from a varied assortment of materials such as magazines, comics as well as from different periods of Sri Lankan history. The artist’s interest in Mughal paintings can be seen both in his preference to sculpt in miniature form and through his series of female figures that look at the sexual exploitation of women in tandem with the celebration of their beauty.
