‘Raja Theatre Halt’ depicts a roadside shrine located near an old theatre called ‘Raja’. The shrine sat on the road to Kankesanthurai, one of the main arterial roads in the Northern Province. Like many others, however, it was removed as part of the many road-widening projects that began in the aftermath of the civil conflict in 2009. At this time the artist frequently travelled from Colombo to Jaffna and began to document the detrimental effects of the ‘peace-building’ efforts upon the landscape. Roadside shrines are commonly found across Sri Lanka and are maintained by communities on a day-to-day basis. Thalawatta captures the beguiling beauty of these shrines and the informal economies of maintenance and decoration involved in their creation.
