‘Artefacts from Jaffna’ is a book that appears to only consist of empty pages. On closer inspection, however, each page records a piece of furniture, an object or curio, delineated as a hand-embossed line drawing, present but missing from view. The trace of the work left behind by a carbon paper appears on the reverse of each page. The work was made in response to a collection of furniture, catalogued in a book by Channa Daswatte titled ‘Colonial Period Furniture in the Geoffrey Bawa Collection’ (2012). After reading this book, the artist began to imagine what such a collection of objects would look like in book format if it attempted to catalogue all the artefacts that had been looted from temples, homes and public buildings in Jaffna during and after the conflict. ‘Artefacts from Jaffna’ is not only a haunting reminder of looting during times of conflict but also a quietly articulated critique of the desire to collect and own.
