Laki Senanayake’s work is most well known for its lyrical line and his ability to delineate trees, figures and animals, especially birds, with a poised and expressive simplicity of stroke and mark-making. ‘Nowhere Is Now Here’ is a rare example of the artist’s non-figurative work. While the work captures Senanayake’s humorous play on words, it also appears two years following the unthinkable violence of the anti-Tamil riots on 23 July 1983 when tyres were used to burn victims.
